JOIN PROFESSORS Alan Davis and Thom Tammaro on a tour of some of the most fascinating scenic, cultural, literary, and historic cities and sites in Ireland. The study tour will include a well-balanced mix of professionally guided tours, lectures, small-group activities, and free time to pursue individual interests.
Professor Davis teaches in the English Department. He accompanied the Eurospring program to Oxford in 2001 and 2006; he has also co-led study tours to the British Isles, Ireland, Iceland, Amsterdam and Paris on six different occasions. He is Senior Editor of New Rivers Press, a teaching press now associated with MSUM, has written three prize winning books of short fiction and co-edited ten editions of American Fiction, a national anthology. He has received two Fulbrights, one to Slovenia and one to Indonesia.
Professor Tammaro teaches in the English Department and Directs the MFA in Creative Writing Program. He accompanied the Eurospring program to Oxford in 2005 and 2009, and with Davis, co-led a study tour to England in 2010. He has traveled widely in Europe. He was the recipient of a Jerome Foundation Travel and Writing Fellowship to Italy. He is a widely published writer and anthologist, the recipient of three Minnesota Book Awards for anthologies he has co-edited, and the author of four books of poems.
The study tour will include seminars during spring semester (times TBA). Students may also participate in a post-trip gallery exhibit and a group reading in the Fargo/Moorhead community.

Early morning arrival Dublin. Pick up by coach and drop at Dublin hotel (near G.B. Shaw’s birthplace). Check in. Afternoon, introduction to locality and use of public transportation system. Dublin Writers’ Museum. Rest of day free to explore St. Stephen’s Green, Grafton Street, National Gallery, St. Patrick’s, Christchurch, Kilmainham Gaol.

Morning literary-themed, guided walking tour. Afternoon: James Joyce Centre, Trinity College & Book of Kells. Group dinner at Dublin eatery. Performance at the Abbey Theatre.

Irish Writers Centre. Optional trip to Joyce’s Tower at Sandymount (public transportation). Free time.

Morning Departure for Cork via Rock of Cashel. Free evening in Cork. Overnight in Cork.

Travel to Tralee via Ring of Kerry. Evening (optional): Dance and theatre performance of Gaelic folk music and history at Siamsa Tire Theatre. Overnight in Tralee.

Dingle Peninsula Tour. Stunning coastal vistas, Neolithic and early Christian stone monuments (gallaun), stone bee-hive huts (clochans), Gallarus Oratory. Return to Tralee for free evening of live traditional Irish music on Castle and Rock Streets. Overnight in Tralee.

Depart Tralee for Galway via Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. Overnight in Galway.

Day trip to Aran Islands (Inishmore), home to Liam O’Flaherty and the subject of many writers, especially John Millington Synge. Hike, bike, or ride the van to Dun Aengus. Overnight in Galway.

Tour of Yeats’ Tower Home at Thoor Ballylee & Coole Park. Evening travel to Dunguaire Castle for medieval banquet, with Irish tales, folk songs, poetry readings by local writers and musicians. Overnight in Galway.

Students can earn three or six graduate credits or undergraduate credits in EnglishStudents will work on individual projects and will have the opportunity to collaborate in a one-on-one working environment with their peers in writing. Required: selected readings, site-specific tours and/or lectures, daily log and daily journal while on study tour, attendance on tour at brainstorming, workshop, and tutorial meetings. (Spring seminar meetings are optional for non-student participants who audit a class.)
Accommodations will be in 3 and 4 star hotels, with en-suite facilities, based on double occupancy, with full Irish style breakfasts included.
We will be traveling by coach between sites and will utilize public transportation while in
Dublin. You should pack light—one suitcase per person (45 lbs. max)—as no porterage is included. At times, you might have to carry your suitcase for several blocks or up stairs.
$3,390.00 (subject to possible changes due to fluctuations in the exchange rate or an increase in the airfare). The price is based on a maximum of 20 participants. Includes round-trip airfare from Fargo, ground transportation as indicated on itinerary, accommodations, breakfasts, three group meals, tours and lectures as indicated on the itinerary, tips and gratuities, and group insurance.
Tuition for 3-6 credits is extra. Participants not taking the tour for credit will be required to audit a course and pay the tuition.
You are responsible for all additional expenses including lunches and dinners, travel not included in the itinerary, passport/photo fees, entrance fees to sites not included on the itinerary, and personal items.
Registration & Deposits
The tour is limited to 20 participants on a first-come-first-serve basis. A $150 payment, including a $50 non-refundable application fee, must accompany the application in order to hold the airline reservation. Students receiving financial aid may make special arrangements to pay the program fee when disbursements are made. However, the whole fee MUST be paid before departure.
Participants may receive a full refund (minus the $50 non-refundable application fee) by submitting a request in writing by February 1. Refunds after that date may depend on MSUM’s ability to recover payments made to overseas providers. Even if no payments have been made, in the event a participant cancels after February 1, charges will remain on the participant’s account until paid. The airline ticket is non-refundable. Once issued in the traveler’s name, it is the participant’s responsibility to negotiate with the airline when making a change to the itinerary or cancelling.
